BAFTA`s 2009: Award voor de Pinewood Studios

Komende zondag worden de BAFTA`s uitgereikt. Hierin is een rol voor de wereldberoemde Pinewood Studios weggelegd.

Op de Pinewood Studios worden en werden vele films en televisieseries opgenomen. Ook was het complex gast voor een aantal grote televisie-uitzendingen. Een voorbeeld hiervan was het populaire televisieprogramma The Weakest Link met Anne Robinson. Komende zondag ontvangt de directie van de studio`s een speciale BAFTA award voor alle verdiensten voor de Britse televisie en filmindustrie. Dit meld  The Times. Ook de Shepperton en Teddington Studios horen bij Pinewood. Op elk terrein worden televisie, film en commerciële activiteiten gebundeld. Al is het wel zo dat de Pinewood Studios echt zijn bedoeld voor het maken van films.

In 2007 en 2008 werden op de Pinewood Studios de volgende films opgenomen: The Bourne Ultimatium, Mamma Mia, The Dark Knight en natuurlijk Quantum Of Solace.

James Bond

Pinewood is de thuisbasis van de filmactiviteiten rondom de James Bondfilms. Ook de verschillende productiekantoren zijn hier gevestigd. Sinds Doctor No (1962) zijn vele grote en kleine scènes uit de films opgenomen. Bekende voorbeelden hiervan zijn alle binnenscènes in het Mi6 gebouw, de scènes uit From Russia With Love (1963) in en rond het doolhof, de gigantische scènes in You Only Live Twice (1967) in de uitgeholde vulkaan, The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) met de Liparus Tanker en de scènes op de lanceerbasis van Hugo Drax in Moonraker (1979). Voor deze grote scènes op zeer grote locaties is de speciale Albert R. Broccoli 007 stage gebouwd.

Maar ook zijn er delen van Goldfinger (1965) opgenomen. We noemen de achtervolging op James Bond door en rond de goudfabriek van Auric Goldfinger in Zwitserland. Hiervoor werden enkele straatjes gebruikt. De auto`s raceten langs het Props Departement en de kledingopslagplaatsen. De scènes werden zo beroemd dat de directie van de studios besloot om de straatjes onder andere Goldfinger Avenue te noemen. Maar ook de 007 Drive spreekt tot de verbeelding. Als u deze straat inloopt kunt u niet om de 007 stage heen.

Nu volgen nog een aantal scènes in de James Bondfilms die op Pinewood zijn gefilmd. Ook vermelden we of deze in de 007 stage zijn opgenomen. Live and Let Die (1973), de scènes in de ondergrondse schuilplaats van Kananga. Octopussy (1983), interieurscènes. A View To a Kill (1985), de scènes in de mijn in Silicon Valley op de 007 Stage. Voor Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) had Eon Productions net als voor Goldeneye (1995) haar eigen studio gebouwd. Toch weerhield het hen er niet van om terug te keren naar de 007 Stage voor opnames in en rond het stealth schip van Elliot Carver.

In 1998 keerde de crew van The World Is Not Enough terug naar de Pinewood Studios. Zo noemen we de opnames op en rond de Kaspische zee bij de kaviaarfabriek van Valentin Zukovsky in de grote watertank en de scènes in Azerbeidzjan in de mijn. Hiervoor werd de 007 stage gebruikt. In 2002 zijn er veel opnames voor Die Another Day gemaakt. Het ijspaleis en de stunts met de Aston Martin V12 Vanquish en de Jaguar XKR op de  ijsvlaktes in IJsland zijn voorbeelden.

De crew gebruikte het Back Lot voor de scène waarin Bond in zijn Aston Martin wordt geraakt door een raket en vervolgens op zijn dak beland. Deze stunt was te gevaarlijk om op de uitgestrekte ijsvlaktes van IJsland uit te voeren. In Casino Royale (2006) en Quantum Of Solace (2008) zien we vele scènes die op de studios zijn gemaakt. Voor Casino Royale hebben we het dan onder andere over de scènes in en rond het zinkende huis in Venetië. Voor Quantum Of Solace spreken we over het gevecht en de achtervolging van Bond op Mitchell in en rond Siena in Italië. Maar ook over de scènes in de DC3 hoog boven Bolivia en meer.

Niet alleen de studio`s maar ook de laatste James Bondfilm Quantum Of Solace is op de BAFTA`s vertegenwoordigd. Ze zijn genomineerd voor twee awards. In de categorieën Beste geluid en beste visuele special effects heeft de film flinke concurrentie. De liveshow wordt op zondag 8 februari door de BBC uitgezonden.

Het eerste deel van de show kunt u bekijken op BBC2 van 21:00u tot en met 22:00u Nederlandse tijd. Om 22:00u schakelt u over naar BBC1 voor het tweede deel dat tot 23:00 uur Nederlandse tijd duurt. Jonathan Ross presenteert het geheel.

Pinewood and Shepperton Studios Win BAFTAs

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has announced that Pinewood and Shepperton Studios will receive the award for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema at the Orange British Academy Film Awards ceremony at London’s Royal Opera House on Sunday 8 February 2009.

Awarded annually, the award for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema was introduced in 1978 and is presented in honour of Michael Balcon. The first recipients were the Special Visual Effects team for Superman and others include Kevin Brownlow, Mike Leigh, Kenneth Branagh, Derek Jarman, Lewis Gilbert, Channel Four Films, production manager Joyce Herlihy and stuntman Vic Armstrong. Last year’s winner was props master Barry Wilkinson whose career spans over 40 years on such iconic, British film franchises as Harry Potter and Bond.

Shepperton Studios and Pinewood Studios are Europe’s leading filming facilities and two of the world’s most prestigious studios. They are synonymous with world class British and international productions, and the impressive heritage of these industry stalwarts dates back nearly 75 years.

They have been home to some of the most successful, critically acclaimed and award winning feature films ever made such as The African Queen, David Lean’s Great Expectations, Dr Strangelove, Superman, Alien, The Shining, Gandhi, and most recently The Bourne Ultimatum and 20 of the 22 Bonds including Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace.

The studios have grown alongside the film industry and now boast the largest sound stage in Europe. Originally built for The Spy Who Loved Me, it has since hosted the Louvre Gallery for The Da Vinci Code, a Greek fishing village for Mamma Mia! and a chocolate river for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Other globally unique facilities include the Underwater Stage which has been used by Joe Wright for Atonement, H Stage which became a full-scale Batcave in Batman Begins and the Korda Theatre which has mixed the sound for the award winning Shakespeare in Love and Gosford Park amongst many other films.

With over 1,500 films having been made at the studios, they have been a home away from home for many filmmakers such as Ridley Scott and Paul Greengrass. The studios have also nurtured such talent as Tim Burton who has shot five films at the studios including Sweeney Todd and Sleepy Hollow and this year’s two-time BAFTA nominee, Kate Winslet, who has completed seven films at the studios including Sense and Sensibility and Finding Neverland.

The studios are continuing to look to the future by providing vocational training to educate the UK’s world class creative sector and provide a blank canvas for the imagination of the international film community.

Finola Dwyer, Chair of BAFTA’s Film Committee, said: “Pinewood and Shepperton Studios have been at the creative heart of British filmmaking for over 70 years. This award recognises the role they have played in bringing to life some of the most memorable and iconic images in cinema history.”

The Orange British Academy Film Awards begin on BBC Two from 8pm, with the final hour on BBC One from 9pm on Sunday 8 February. A preview show featuring interviews from the red carpet will be broadcast on BBC Three from 7pm.

Update zondag 8 februari: Daniel Craig reikt een award uit en is dus van de partij op het gala. Naast Craig presenteren nog een aantal bekende sterren een award aan de winnaars dit zijn; Sharon Stone, Emma Watson, Mickey Rourke, Goldie Hawn, Michael Sheen en Patrick Stewart. Dit meld The Press Association. Op een awardshow worden vele sterren uitgenodigd. Geconfirmeerde gasten zijn Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Kate Winslet, Penelope Cruz en Meryl Streep. De show wordt vanavond uitgezonden in blokken van een uur op de BBC. Men begint op BBC2 om 21:00u en vervolgt op BBC 1 om 22:00u.
